Adhesive Capsulitis

This is a shoulder condition that results in loss of motion. Another term is frozen shoulder. The shoulder forms scar tissue that limits motion. The continued pain results in decreased motion and more scar tissue. About half of the time there is a clear cause such as a rotator cuff tear or humerus fracture. However, sometimes the shoulder just begins to stiffen. This is one of the most painful conditions of the shoulder. Patients often report feeling emotionally drained.

Physical therapy, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories, cortisone injections, and topical pain relievers are frequently utilized. However, sometimes it is necessary to perform an arthroscopy and remove the scar tissue. The shoulder is also manipulated during the surgery to improve motion.
